Berne

Berne is the capital of Switzerland. It lies between the Jura and the Alps, yet feels more like a large village with relaxed inhabitants than a rushing city. One of its defining features is the Aare, which surrounds the Old Town and offers a refreshing escape in summer for those brave enough to jump in.

The unique Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with sandstone houses, arcades and cobbled streets that have preserved much of its medieval character. Look closely and you will find figures scattered throughout the city – on fountains and facades, many of them commissioned by the old guilds.

Museums in Berne

Like many capitals, Berne is home to a surprising number of interesting museums. Among them are the Swiss Alpine Museum, Natural History Museum, Bern History Museum and Museum of Communication, alongside three major art institutions: the Kunstmuseum Bern, Kunsthalle Bern and the Zentrum Paul Klee, designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano. Most can easily be reached on foot around the city centre; for the Zentrum Paul Klee, take bus 12 from Bärenpark or the railway station.

With children, we particularly recommend the Natural History Museum, with playful exhibitions that invite young visitors to discover the natural world. Its impressive historic dioramas of wildlife are among the museum’s highlights and have protected heritage status.

Nature and Culture

Berne offers a rare combination of nature and culture. The Aare surrounds the city, creating beautiful views, riverside paths and places to relax, while museums, parks and historic landmarks reveal its rich cultural heritage.
